Successful second German-Russian Summer School

Successful second German-Russian Summer School

From August 15–26, 2016, TU-Campus EUREF and the Ural Federal University (UrFU) organized the second common German-Russian Summer School.  Following up to last year’s program in Berlin, 20 students from TU Berlin and young professionals from German companies participated in the two-week program in Yekaterinburg. In lectures, excursions and practical trainings, the German and Russian participants learnt about challenges and solutions regarding the energy system.

One highlight of the Summer School was the opening ceremony – the Foreign Ministers of both countries attended the event. Frank-Walter Steinmeier emphasized the importance of mutual understanding which can be facilitated through events like the German-Russian Summer School (you can read the whole speech here). Sergey Lavrov agreed that differences should not be in the focus of the two countries’ relationships and pointed out that Germany is one of Russia’s key partner but he missed consistent standards in some political actions.

The students used their chance to ask a number of questions about foreign politics, international relations and energy-related topics. After a group picture, the ministers left for further consultations, whereas the Summer School program continued with a panel discussion with Sergey Shmatko (former Russian Energy Minister), Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hans-Jörg Bullinger (chairman of the board, Wilo Foundation) and Prof. Dr. Frank Behrendt (managing director TU-Campus EUREF gGmbH). The discussion was hosted by Prof. Viktor Koksharov (rector of the UrFU) and as in many following discussions in and outside of the classroom, the German Energiewende and Russia’s large fossil energy resources were the centre of the discussion.

The Summer School was made possible thanks to a number of sponsors which partly also engaged in the program when their representatives from companies like Schneider Electric and Wilo gave presentations.
